Dependent eligibility requirements

Complete these steps to cover dependents under the Medical, Dental, Vision, and Life Insurance Plans.

  1. Enroll new dependents in some or all of the benefit plans July 10-28.
  2. Provide each dependent’s Social Security number (SSN).
  3. Make sure the information for dependents who are already covered is up to date on the enrollment tool.
  4. Keep documentation on file in case of an audit.

Dependent eligibility requirements

  • Spouse

    Your lawful spouse.

  • Child

    Your child under age 26, including your biological child, stepchild whose primary residence is with you, adopted child or child placed with you for adoption, or a child for whom you are a legal guardian or custodian. Your child age 26 or older who is incapable of self-support for purposes of the Federal Social Security Act, provided the disability began before age 26.

  • Related Legally Domiciled Adult

    A Related Legally Domiciled Adult (LDA) must meet the following criteria:

    • Your tax dependent under IRS 152, and
    • Your child or stepchild over the age of 26, or your parent or sibling age 18 or older, and
    • Shares your principal residence (at least six months prior to the effective date of coverage), and
    • Is not employed by you.
  • Unrelated Legally Domiciled Adult

    An Unrelated Legally Domiciled Adult (LDA) must meet the following criteria:

    • Your LDA is not related to you in any way that would prohibit marriage, and
    • You and your LDA cannot be married (according to the Plan definition) to another person, and
    • Your LDA shares your principal residence (at least six months prior to the effective date of coverage), and
    • Your LDA is age 18 or older, and
    • Your LDA has a personal relationship with you that is intended to be permanent and shares with you a mutual obligation of support and responsibility for each other’s welfare, and
    • Your LDA is not employed by you.
  • Legally Domiciled Child

    A Legally Domiciled Child (LDC) is a child who is:

    • Under age 26, and
    • Is the biological child, stepchild, or adopted child of your LDA, and
    • Is a child for whom your LDA is a legal guardian or custodian.
